iEducate Project - SL partner meeting

Knowing Hand and F21 met in Second Life today to discuss the iEducate island design and locating of the new virtual training centre.  This new resource will allow educators at F21 to use their existing teaching materials in a 3D virtual world setting. Courses being delivered from their office in Bulgaria via the Second Life(SL) island will include CCNA, CNP, SUN microsytems and Java programming.

The first meeting of these partners "in-world" was seen as a great success.  Jim Shuker of Knowing Hand, aka Jimbo Hefferman in SL, said; "We had arranged to start with an audio only conference using Skype but following some technical difficulties moved into Second Life.  Even though there were people who had only used SL once before, the meeting quickly got up to speed and real progress was made in agreeing how partners would work together on project outputs based in SL.  Overall a great success!"

iEducate Project - SL Training Session

iEducate Partner meeting in Second Life

This 2 hour session started at 10GMT with 5 partners; Research House, Tinta, Wisamar, Civil Radio and Knowing Hand who were represented by Pete Stevens (Pet Pinazzo), Markus Jarvinen (Jaysay Shackleton), Sabinbe Roehrig-Mahhou (Sabine Ranimo), Ákos Cserháti (Akos Ronas) & Jim Shuker (Jimbo Hefferman) respectively. Avatar names in brackets.

The session started in the central area of the island with a look at the layout of the SL viewer, focusing on how to communicate, change an avatar's profile settings, add friends, join and change groups and the inventory.  This was followed by learning the basics of how to navigate in Second Life (SL), change appearance, walk, fly, take and upload pictures.  Each Avatar was given 1000$L by Jimbo from the project budget to use for uploading media and while exploring SL.  Some of the typical jargon was also mentioned such as "in-world" meaning in Second Life and "rezzed" meaning things appearing in-world.

We then moved to the Camp Fire area of the island via the teleport function for speed.  This area demonstrates nicely through the use of ambient music,a few of the in-built audio functions of SL such as proximity to a sound increases volume and spatially aware surround sound.  So with a multiple speaker set-up the sound will appear to be coming from the correct direction.  We also took time to upload profile pictures and complete profiles.

The session finished with a tour of the island looking at the various areas currently zoned and waiting for discussion with partners on what content might be suggested.

After the meeting Estzer (Estilein Greymoon) from Wisamar popped into SL guided by Sabine for a quick Tour.

Partners were very positive about the island design and looked forward to seeing it develop over the duration of the project.
Next meeting in Second Life is set for 12th April. Partners are asked to think about and bring with them 3 ways which SLcould be used in project.
